I see in JCE Editor I restrict the File Directory Path based on some variables like userid, user type, profile -- what I'd like to do is restrict based on Joomla user group. We have teams who manage content, and anyone on the team should have access to the team image folder via JCE, but we want to restrict them from all other folders.

Is there a way to accomplish this?

Yes, use the $usergroup variable, eg: images/$usergroup

FYI - $usertype is the same as $usergroup
Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
